Picture Hanging

Now there’s a Nightmare. Get it wrong and and a mess will follow. There is a big difference in just hanging a picture and getting it right. Often times, I visit I clients home and they tell me something is not quite right with a room. They like everything in it, but something is bothering them and they don’t know what it is. Often times it’s the wall hangings. The room lacks balance. I am not talking about a tight symetrical situation, although that can work in some rooms. I am talking about the walls looking like an after thought. This is a very big subject, so I will try and just give a few illustrations of what can work and ways to do it. There are no quick fixes, you will need to invest time and energy into this or call your decorator in with his or her favorote hanging guy or gal.

The images come from this website – http://klomm.br.ms/images/arranging-pictures-on-wall

What ever the arrangement you might like to try this is a fool proof way to hang pictures. Trace pictures on brown papaer, mark the nail, tape to the wall with painters tape, hammer the nail through the nail hole, remove the paper and hang.

Always select the right hanger for the picture and the wall. otherwise all your work will be wasted and you will create a whole lot more work.

Lots of good examples here, before you start know that this is not easy and it is not a quick job, but it is WORTH IT.

Given Greens

The Credit

Terms my clients get sick of hearing from me “Given Greens” also know as “Natures Neutrals” Here is a link to a board that will begin (it’s a Pinterest in progress) to give context to my pretentious utterings. These are things I have and do say at my most creative moments.

But, another one that my Hubby reminds me of often, is, when a client asked my if she could put the Picasso in the Dining Room. My response was, which way does it go and what color is it?.  (I am an artists too, so can say these things, Can’t I, Ok I know I can’t but I did and I will be eternally sorry (ish)). This was after I had installed an Andy Warhol in a hallway, because it did not quite go.  And yes they were all real, including the Old Masters. I love my job, I LOVE MY JOB. How many decorators get to say where to stick an Andy Warhol.  I degress back to the topic….

Given Greens and Natural Neutrals, is the starting palette that is there to be begin with.  These are the things that we can do little about, unless we block off all the windows. The are the tones that come into our interior spaces without our permission.  And for the most part we love them.

If it works in nature, then it works in our created palettes, Greens with brown, and blue and orange and yellow and on and on. But, when they come in t hey do change things. Our internal spaces change tones thoughout the day and throughout the year.  We do need to take care about our color choices in this regard, checking paint colors, and fabrics in different lights as often as we can during the selection process.

Take Given Greens and Natures Neutrals and use them, see the main color in the space above, does not come from the decor, it is caste though the space, with a soft and lovely palette of teals and greens.

Really Cool Headboard

Credit

This looks wonderful, but would need a little adaptation to work in reality.  Glass and the back of one’s head, do not make a good combination.  Raise the frame up and use a upholstered headboard, to at least head height when sitting up in bed.  The look can easily be recreated by using fabric that is the same color as the frame.  I know a Girl that would just love this.

Love this, but I have issues.

More info about where it came from here

I love the overall feel of this, I love the clever use of antiques and collectibles. I love the composition of the photograph and, and, and…

But

It is not practical, and hence I feel it is staged, beautifully though.

If this were my bath, I would be in the ER right now. I would have severe bruises from that vice, after I walked into the handle a dozen times and multiple lacerations to the head requiring stritches after tripping and falling, head first over the crates of stuff on the floor.

Apply this style of design by all means, but, please think through the way you move through your space.

No Guilt Required.

We were wanting to update our Living Room and Dining Room at the house, by bringing in some of this years fresh and vibrants colors, such as teals and apricots. In additon to color we wanted to go a little more contemporary without going to far.

Fissure by Portia.

So we have changed out the oriental rugs for solid, chocolate colored ones and changed out the art work for more abstract, expressionist pieces. (Fissue is one of the new pieces).

This quick fix for the Oriential nesting tables brought some vibrancy to one side of the room. We cut pieces of maps to size and simply put them under the existing glass tops. Cost $22 for an old National Geographic Atlas. Not too old to be an antique, so no guilt required. The throw pillows are next.

Dress a window

From – zsazsabellagio.blogspot.com

This is a color combo that I absolutely adore, Cream, Lime Green, Blue and of course Turquiose. These drapes have a vertical insert. A wide strip could have been used. Good Fabricators are not cheap, inserts require talent, so when looking at your budget, think about spending as much as you can on great fabrics, as a base to work from.

One of the things my clients get sick of hearing from me, is

“for every action there is an equal an opposite cost”

I believe that there is a point in decorating when too much becomes way too much and any additional money spent will not be realised in better design.

So start simple and add slowly.

All that said-  I love this vignette, especially the green coming through the window, Using our “Given Greens” is a a blog for another day.

Style Convergence

Image taken from Pinterest Page

What do we like about this bedroom? The neutral blends of silver and taupes, beiges and cream, a little shock of color underneath the chair rail. Staged, but gives good direction for this kind of look. High ceilings with almost ceiling to floor window, (Who’s has these?) suggest this is a European room, also the blend of classican and modern design. The Scandinavian design bed does not look out of place with the vintage floor covering.  This transition of style and period is only possible when we relax into our own personal design foorprint. Take care not to mix too many styles.  Just because we like them does not mean they will always go together, but there are possibilities. Many good decorators and designers will give you a consultation without getting into a long term committment. Explain what you need when you call for an appointment, so there is no misunderstanding.

Perfect Palette

http://providenceltddesign.com/

We love this room from Providence Design. It is timeless. There are lot of options in the teals and greeny blues around at the moment, and the trend seems to be to go cute and bold with it.  We think this rooms colors, give a good balance, preventing the room becoming dates too soon. We love the liveable nature of it, along with the soft comfortable lines. The bolster probaby needs a home when the sofa is in use, but good job guys.

Great Slip Covers, which we are now able to provide from our Interiors Services.

Main message here is :-

Never underestimate the power of great velvets.

Built Ins

From Mackenzie Horan

We love to use this treatment on Bookshelves, about to do it again in one of our Clients South Roanoke Home. Paint at the back of the built ins, changes the room in a flash.

Leftover Tile

http://www.designsponge.com

This is a beautiful use of ceramic tile, probably not leftovers, as it is such a considered pattern. But, if you have a few left over tiles from a project, you can add a little interest and color around the yard. Be a little careful about placement we do not want folks slipping on a wet shiny surfaces.  Prepare your surface well to ensure that they have a solid, flat base and tile away. The type of tile is a little important, but if they are leftovers anyway, enjoy them for as long as they last.
